Chasing Charley

Shortly after 1 p.m. on Friday & we’re home!  Two days post amp.

Charley wasn’t moving much at the vet, but I visited early this morning & we got him to get up, hop outside, pee & poop.  Hooray!  Now that we’re home, he’s whimpering and whining.  I just gave him a dose of Tramadol and hopefully he’ll be more comfortable soon.

The weather is beautiful outside and I’m enjoying a couple of hours at home w/ my baby before my kids come home from school.  They’re 7 and 9 years old (a girl and a boy) — SO excited to see their pup!

For the next few days, Charley will be corralled in the kitchen area behind a kid fence we borrowed from the neighbors.  This helps to give him his own space and prevents him from wandering off too far.  Half of the main floor of the house is slippery floors, which have always been his nemesis anyway.  So we’ll keep him off those unless I can hang on to his collar.

God bless the vet, Dr. Jim.  He just called to make sure we made it home alright and to answer the questions I already had!  The bandage slipped a bit (I added more padding & wrap on top of it) and we’ll hopefully keep it looking healthy & clean until the sutures are removed in 2 weeks.

Off to bake him some homemade dog treats.  Thank you SO MUCH for all of your kind words and support in just the past day!  I really needed the encouragement and I feel like I’m capable of being a *good mom* to Charley as he continues to recover.  Bless you all!

    Welcome home Charley!

Consider putting some area rugs and runners around to help keep Charley from slipping. Check out Jerry’s News Blog post with no-slip flooring ideas and the Gear blog for more paw traction products for dogs.

Welcome home, Charley! Good for you. I know now that you are home you will just get better lickety split. We sympathize on the slippery floors. We have found that laying down big bath mats on the hard wood and tile floors really helps. Plus, if he does slip it’s more padding for him to go down on. Just remember that the first week or two are the toughest. Don’t get discouraged – he will get better and be just fine without that bum leg.

Bathmats are a wonderful idea! I just brought down 3 from my bathroom & will pick up a couple more from the store tomorrow.

I wish we could take credit for the bath mats, but somebody else here recommended it to us right after Ginger had her surgery. It really helped Ginger. That’s the great thing about this site – we are all here for each other

Yay Charley’s home! Good thinking keeping him confined to his own space. We too laid down numerous inexpensive scatter rugs on the main floor (hardwood in main living area; treacherous laminate in the kitchen that gives neither dog any purchase…at least there’s give in the hardwood and you can tell by all the scratches:) )

Homemade doggy treats. Yummy. Keep us posted on Charley’s recovery.

And of course you’re a good mom!!

The treats have been a hit! We made enough to share with our other puppy friends, too! Who doesn’t love a recipe that includes a little brown sugar AND bacon fat?!

Thanks for your encouragement! We’ve had at least 10 visitors since we got home — all the neighbor kids want to pet him and think he’s pretty awesome. I have to agree!
