Chasing Charley

Three t-shirts chewed up in the span of 14 hours (and 8 of those hours were sleeping). Plenty of re-wrapping. At this point the wrap and pad are because of a tiny bit of oozing and just to protect the area from his scratching and obsessive licking.

However, I’m thinking that the wrap may be doing more harm than good at this point. His right front armpit (the only front leg, of course) is rubbed raw and super irritated. So as of right now, Charley has another pad on that area just for cushioning and wrap around the whole business.

And a cone. It may really suck for a week or so, but those areas NEED to heal before I can trust him to not break open and bleed everywhere.

Except for the fact that with the cone on he can’t turn around in his crate. So my dad is bringing a bigger crate from the cabin and hopefully that will help a bit, too.

I called Dr. Jim (he’s on speed dial now) just to see whether I should do anything else about the armpit rawness. He thought he should come in this afternoon for a cortisone shot. So after I go to the Halloween Parade at my kids’ school, we’ll high tail it home & then to the vet’s office across town.

I just need one more week. I think we’ll be better in a week.

Charley, Charley, Charley. You were forewarned about the cone.

A week of being a cone head isn’t that bad, after all, if it gets his wound to heal.

Good luck on your continuing management of Charley’s recovery!

We’ll keep trying everything we can to get him healed! I have no clue where the money will come from, but we’re going to keep trying. 🙂 He’s sleeping (Tramadol) now, wearing the cone & a ripped up t-shirt. He’s going to look GREAT in his costume tomorrow, lol!!

Oh thank you…. it’s been such a long month! Dr. Jim gave Charley a laser treatment, cortisone and we’re back on the Tramadol. Oh – and wearing the Cone of Shame for the week. We’ll get there!

Perhaps try removing all Charley’s bandages and supervising him for a bit to see if he appreciates the freedom. Many (most) dogs go home with no bandages. Sometimes we feel vets put bandages on more for the people. Just a thought… looking forward to hearing how the week goes.

Interesting insight — I thought all dogs went home w/ bandages! Charley was oozing a lot, so I can’t imagine what a nightmare that would have been! At any rate, we are bandage-free as of tonight. Charley had laser treatments on his wounds, a cortisone shot, we’re on full pain meds for awhile again & he’s wearing a cone for a week. Hopefully this will get everything healed well enough that he won’t lick the daylights out of it & tear something open!!! 🙂

Wow sounds like Charley is a chewing machine – 3 T-shirts! Mackenzie came home without any bandages (in fact, I thought that was strange) but it worked out well. She wore a T-shirt every day during her healing process (never to chew at them like Charley :)) I guess you have no choice in the cone. Too bad for Charley but it’s only for a week (if you can stand it :). Good luck with everything – just think, you’re through the worst of it now.

Oh – I can only hope we’re on the easier side of things! Just when we get one thing looking good (the incision), then I get this other raw sore to deal with. Phlllbbbbtttt!!!!! Day by day.

Oh no not the cone of shame!!! I hate that thing, and I only wore it for like two hours. I hope it comes off soon 🙂

Get well soon Charley! I wish for you fast recovery. Be strong!
